Social Networking: A Purposeful Loss of Privacy

I chose to do my project on the Analysis of social networking: a purposeful loss of privacy. I think losing privacy becomes a big issue of today social networking, as a lot of people post their full birthday, address, telephone number, this risk of identity theft is increasing. I would some examples of how social networking has a negative impact on privacy. However, I believe privacy problems are caused by both users and websites. Therefore, I will discuss this question from two aspects. This is my brief summary of my project, and I plan to get more great details.

  1. Hi Qihui, I think this is a great topic. Many times, I find myself accepting application agreements without fully reading them and entering my personal information. It really makes me wonder, "how are they using my information?". A perfect example of the negative impacts of social networking is the Facebook-Cambridge Analytica breach in 2018, where millions of Facebook users’ personal information was gathered without consent by Cambridge. I think this is a very important topic and it would be great to see how you evaluate it from both the website and user perspective.
